A home network consists of two or more devices that are connected to a single Internet connection through a router. These devices are usually computers, but they may include a host of other computer-related devices, such as printers, media devices, and game consoles.
This Help topic describes the tools and procedures that you can use with your Symantec product to manage your home network and its devices.
A home network consists of computers and other devices that share your internet connection. The Network Security Map helps you to view and manage your home network.
By using your Network Security Map, you can do the following:
* Remotely monitor the computers that are connected to your home network.
* View the status of your wireless network connection.
* Grant or deny permission to networked devices to access your computer.
* View and change details about a computer or device that is connected to your home network.
* Track known, unknown, or intruder devices on your network.
You can remotely monitor the computers that are connected to your network. The Network Security Map window provides a graphical representation of different devices on the network to which your computer is connected.
In addition, the Network Security Map window provides the security status of the following computers:
* Computers that are remotely monitored
* MY PC
To view devices on the Network Security Map
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. To close the Network Security Overview window, click OK.
If you do not want to open the Network Security Overview window in future, check Do not show this again. However, if you want to view the Network Security Overview window again, open My Network from main window Settings, and uncheck Show welcome screen at startup.
3. To view the device details, in the Network Security Map window, click the device icon.
Use the scroll arrows to view other devices in Network Security Map.
The device details area that appears under the device icons displays the following details:
Device Name - Shows the name of the device. You can change the device name in the Edit Device Details window.
Category - Shows the category to which the computer or device belongs
The device category icon provides details on the connection status and security status. All unknown devices show as New and their category is set to GENERIC DEVICE.
This category may include a host of computer-related devices, such as printers, media devices, and game consoles.
You can change the device category in the Edit Device Details window.
Security Status - Shows how well your computer is protected from threats, risks, and damage
The Security Status is displayed for each computer that is remotely monitored.
Remote Monitoring - Shows whether the computer is connected to a Remote Monitoring group by displaying the status of Remote Monitoring
The possible statuses are:
* ON
* OFF
You can set up or disable Remote Monitoring for MY PC. You can turn off Remote Monitoring for those computers that have 2008 versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus. To turn off Remote Monitoring, click the Turn Off link, and then click Yes to confirm.
Trust Level - Shows the access level that is granted to a remote device to connect to your computer
You can set trust level for all devices other than your PC.
Connection - Shows the status of the connection
The possible statuses are:
* ONLINE
* OFFLINE
IP Address - Shows the IP addresses of the computer or device
Physical Address - Shows the physical address (also known as the Media Access Control, or MAC, address) of the computer or device
You can set up Remote Monitoring by allowing computers on the home network to communicate with your computer. Network Security Map provides the security status of computers that have 2008 versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.
To join or form a home network
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click the MY PC icon.
3. In the MY PC details area, click Setup.
4. In the Remote Monitoring Setup Introduction Wizard, click Next.
5. Type a passkey that is between 6 and 20 characters in length.
6. Click Next.
7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 for all devices that you want to monitor remotely.
You must type the passkey within 30 minutes.
8. When all of the computers that you want to monitor remotely appear in the Discover Wizard, click Next.
You can click Next to stop searching for remote computers at any time, regardless of the number of computers that are found.
9. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.
10. To complete the setup, click Finish.
After you configure your Network Security Map, you can run Setup and find more computers that are connected to your home network.
To find more computers
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click the MY PC icon.
3. In the MY PC details area, click Setup.
4. When all of the computers that are connected to your home network appear in the Remote Monitoring Setup window, click Next.
If you stop the Discovery phase with the computers that have been listed until then, click Next.
5. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.
6. To complete the setup, click Finish.
When you disable Remote Monitoring, you stop remotely monitoring the computers that are connected to your Network Security Map.
You can disable Remote Monitoring for the following:
* All of the computers that you remotely monitor
* An individual computer that you remotely monitor
You can disable Remote Monitoring only after you complete the Remote Monitoring Setup process.
To disable Remote Monitoring for all computers
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click the MY PC icon
3. In the MY PC details area, click Disable.
4. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.
To disable Remote Monitoring for an individual computer
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click the computer for which you want to disable Remote Monitoring.
3. In the computer details area, click Turn Off.
4. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.
You can manually add a computer or device to your Network Security Map.
You can add the following details when you add a device:
* The name or description
* The device category
* The IP address or physical address
Network Security Map finds any computers that are connected to your network. However, you can add computers and devices that are currently not connected.
To add a device to your network security map
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. On the left side of the Network Security Map window, click Add.
3. In the Add a Device dialog box, in the Device Name text box, type the name of the device that you want to add to your Network Security Map. The maximum character length of the device name is 15 characters.
4. In the Device Category list, click a category from one of the following options:
* GENERIC DEVICE
* DESKTOP PC
* LAPTOP
* SERVER PC
* NETWORK PRINTER
* ROUTER/SWITCH
* CABLE/DSL MODEM
* MEDIA DEVICE
* GAME CONSOLE
* PDAMOBILE PHONE
* NETWORK STORAGE DEVICE
* WEB CAMERA
5. In the IP or Physical Address box, type the IP address or physical address of the device that you want to add to your Network Security Map.
You can use the following formats in the IP or Physical address box:
IPv4 address
192.168.2.1
IPv6 address
fe80::12ac:fe44:192a:14cc
Physical address
11-22-c3-5a-fe-a4
Resolvable host
ftp.myfiles.com
The address that you provide is not verified until the device is physically found on the network.
6. Click Add Device.
7. On the left side of the Network Security Map window, click Refresh.
When you refresh, Norton 360 verifies the connection status of the device on your Network Security Map and displays the details in the device details area.
You can change the name and category of a device that is available on your Network Security Map. You can use the categories such as Generic Device, Laptop, Media Device, or Game Console. You can also view the details of the devices that are connected to your Network Security Map.
To edit device details
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click a device icon.
3. In the device details area, click Edit.
4. In the Edit Device Details dialog box, in the Device Name box, type a new name.
5. In the Device Category list, click one of the following device categories.
* GENERIC DEVICE
* DESKTOP PC
* LAPTOP
* SERVER PC
* NETWORK PRINTER
* ROUTER/SWITCH
* CABLE/DSL MODEM
* MEDIA DEVICE
* GAME CONSOLE
* PDA/MOBILE PHONE
* NETWORK STORAGE DEVICE
* WEB CAMERA
The Network Security Map window displays different icons, depending on the category that you select.
You can change the name of your Network Security Map by providing a new name.
To edit network details
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, on the right side of Network Details, click Edit.
3. In the Edit Network Details dialog box, in the Network Name box, type a new name or IP address.
4. Click OK.
The trust level determines the default level of access that devices on your network have to your computer. Any device on your network that is not explicitly Trusted or Restricted uses the trust level of your network. The initial network trust level is set based on the configuration of your computer.
You can modify these settings if you want to change the trust level for the following:
* Your home network
* Devices that are connected to your Network Security Map
To change the trust level for your network
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, on the right side of Network Details, click Edit.
3. In the Edit Network Details window, on the right side of Trust Level, click Edit.
4. To select a trust level for your network, click one of the following:
FULL TRUST
Adds the network to the Trusted list
Full Trust devices are monitored only for known attacks and infections. This setting is recommended only when the device cannot reach your computer in more secure Trust states.
SHARED
Adds the network to the Shared list
The devices that are on the Shared network can access only shared resources on your computer, such as files, folders, and printers. You remain protected from known attacks and other unexpected traffic.
PROTECTED
Adds the network to the Protected list
A network is in the Protected Trust Level when it has not been classified as Trusted, Shared, or Restricted.
5. Click OK.
To change the trust level for a device
1. At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
2. In the Network Security Map window, in the icons list, click the device for which you want to set the trust level.
3. In the device details area, on the right side of Trust Level, click Edit.
4. In the Edit Device Trust Level window, click one of the following:
FULL TRUST
Adds a device to the Full Trust list
Full Trust devices are monitored only for known attacks and infections. This setting is recommended only when the device cannot reach your computer in more secure Trust states.
RESTRICTED
Adds a device to the Restricted list
Restricted devices do not have access to your computer.
PROTECTED (DEFAULT)
Adds a device to the Protected list
When you tag a device with Protected trust level, the device inherits the trust settings of the network to which it connects. The incoming traffic is inspected according to the policy of the network.
5. Click OK.
You can view the status of your wireless network in the Network Security Map window. If your wireless network is not secure, you can turn on encryption on your wireless router.
For more information on how to secure your wireless network, on the left side of the Network Security Map window, click Why is it not secure?, and follow the instructions.
It is recommended that you trust a wireless connection that is secure. Trusting a wireless connection that is not secure puts all of the devices on your home network at risk.
To view the status of your wireless network
* At the bottom of the main window, click My Network.
On the left side of the Network Security Map, under Network Details, the status of your wireless network is displayed.
Your wireless network statuses are:
Wireless Network Secure - Indicates that your wireless network is secure
Wireless Network Not Secure - Indicates that your wireless network is not secure
